The monastery of Montserrat is a wonderful city and monastic building located at the top of the mountain of the same name, 20 kilometers west of Barcelona.

The rock of the mountain on which the monastery is built almost vertically above the buildings. You can drive up to the parking of the monastery, but if you are single or two people, the faster and easier it is to use public transport, rail and Montserrat rack that will take you to the foot of the monastery.
From the top you can admire views of the sea and the rest of Catalonia.

If you like cycling there is a possibility to come to Barcelona through Collserola National Park, a journey very nice, have in mind that it will take you few hours.

The holy site is the Virgin of Montserrat which according to legend appeared in a grotto of the mountain.

The Abbey is a plot of the seventeenth century but the French destroyed a good part, which was rebuilt in the nineteenth century. What follows here the first buildings being restored now.

Another cable San Joan Cable Car can take you a little higher to see the monastery from above, and the possibilities are endless for hiking across the mountain. The information office can give you a map with walks and trials.

You’ll also find a panoramic restaurant, souvenir shop, post office and hotel. The monastery accepts pilgrims but better call before to find out about the conditions.
